The Kano State Police Command has arrested 11 students of Government Boarding Secondary School, Bichi, following the killing of two of their colleagues.
Spokesperson of the command, Abdullahi Kiyawa, confirmed the arrests on Thursday, noting that investigations are ongoing to determine each suspect’s level of involvement.
“Eleven students were arrested over the incident and the investigation is ongoing to find out the level of their involvement,” Kiyawa said as quoted by the Punch.
WikkiTimes gathered that the victims — Hamza Idris Tofawa and Umar Yusuf Dungurawa — were allegedly attacked with sharp metal objects locally referred to as “Gwale-Gwale.”
The tragic incident has sparked outrage, prompting the Kano State Ministry of Education to launch an internal probe. On Wednesday, the Commissioner for Education, Dr Ali Haruna Makoda, directed a full investigation into the deaths.
Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Bashir Bappa Mohammad, delivered the directive during an on-the-spot assessment of the school.
Although the motive for the attack remains unclear, school authorities and security agencies are under pressure to uncover lapses that led to the fatal incident and prevent further breakdown of safety in boarding schools across the state.
Efforts to get further comments from the school management as of press time proved unsuccessful.
