At least 14 people were feared dead as commercial car conveying 15 passengers on high speed veered off the road and plunged into a bridge in Tage village of Kafin Hausa LGA, Jigawa State.
The accident according to Jigawa police was as a result of over speed as the Golf-3 driver lost control upon reaching the flood-damaged Tage bride, which led to the death of 14 passengers while the driver survived.
Shiisu Lawal Adam, Police spokesman in the state confirmed the incident in a statemeent made available to WikkiTimes on Tuesdsy.
He said all the 14 passengers died instantly while the driver was unconscious and receiving treatment at a health facility.
He attributed the accident to over speeding and overloading on the part of the driver.
“When the driver arrived at Tage bridge, which had been damaged during the previous rainy season, he applied a sudden break at high speed, causing him to lose control, the vehicle somersaulted, and fell inside the bridge”, said Lawan.
The police said the victims coming from Hadejia town to Makera village in Kafin Hausa including eight females, two men, and four young men were confirmed dead by a medical doctor on call at Hadejia General Hospital.
He said the command expressed dismay over attituude of some drivers who drive at high speed with overloaded passengers coupled with driving under the influence of drugs.
“The Jigawa State Police Commissioner AT Abdullahi warns motorists, particularly commercial drivers, to avoid driving at high speeds, carrying an overload of people and goods, and using hard drugs while driving”, he added.
