At Least 14 people have been killed in a road accident after a trailer and a Toyota Hiace Bus collided in Kanya Market of Jigawa State.
Four other people have sustained various degrees of injuries.
Jigawa State Police Command Spokesman, Lawan Shiisu Adam, told WikkiTimes that the accident occurred after head-on collision between a trailer and Toyota Hiace bus in Kanya Babba Market Tuesday afternoon.
The trailer was coming from Kanya market but stopped at an Immigration checkpoint when a Toyota Hiace on high-speed rammed into the trailer, leading to the death of 14 passengers on board the bus.
Adam said the 14 people died instantly while four others were hospitalized.
According to him, the driver of the Hiace was coming from Kano and veered off his lane in an apparent attempt to evade the checkpoint.
“Today Tuesday, 16th of July 2024, at about 1120hrs, information at the command’s disposal revealed that there was a fatal motor vehicle accident involving a Daf truck with reg no. GMB 242 KD, coming from Kanya market”.
“On reaching an Immigration checking point, another vehicle, a Toyota Hiace with reg no. XA 381 GAS was also coming from the Kano to Kanya market with overloading and at a high speed”.
“When the immigration officers stopped it, the driver refused to stop and attempted to get around the checkpoint by veering into the other lane. As a result, he collided head-on with the aforementioned Daf truck”,said Adam.
He said that the passengers were confirmed dead and the injured persons were taken to Kanya Babba Cottage Hospital.
“On receipt of the report, the Divisional Police Officer, Kanya Division alongside his patrol team raced to the scene. On their arrival, corpses and injured were evacuated and rushed to Kanya Babba Cottage Hospital. Corpses were certified dead by a doctor on duty, while the injured were receiving medical attention”, added Adam.
WIkkiTimes reports that Jigawa state is among the states with high road accidents in the first three months of 2024, according to a data released by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS).
