No fewer than 27 people were arrested in Ogun State following a violent protest that led to the destruction of Sagamu Local Government secretariat by some protesters who carted away the mace of the council’s legislative house.
WikkiTimes had earlier reported that two banks — Keystone and Union — were set alight by some youths protesting the cash crunch in the state.
Kayode Segun-Okeowo, a youth leader in the town told Daily Trust that the demonstration was aimed at destruction.
“This is not a protest. I’m a comrade and understand the ABC of protest. It’s motivated to cause destruction,” he said, during the perpetrators to stop.
The Council Chairman, Afolabi Odulate also confirmed the incident saying: “they did invade the secretariat. No one was attacked. We had moved workers away before they arrived here. They stole the mace. Yes, they did.”
According to him, normalcy had been restored.
Abimbola Oyeyemi, spokesman for Ogun Police Command stated that 27 suspects have been arrested in connection to the unrest.
“The riots have been brought under control in the greater parts of Sagamu., including the Sagamu- Ijebu Ode Express Road,” Oyeyemi said in a press statement. “Currently, the Commissioner of Police in charge of Ogun State, CP Frank Mba, is personally leading a combined team of policemen and soldiers to tackle the rioters on Bank Road in the centre of Sagamu.”
