4 docked over alleged unlawful possession of dangerous weapons

Four men, Sulaimon Ishola, Sunday Ayabbode, Bashiru Musa and Toheeb Olorunlambe, were on Monday arraigned  in an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court, for alleged possession of guns and belonging to a secret society.

The defendants, all residents of Ijora, Lagos, are facing a three-court charge of conspiracy, belonging to a secret society and unlawful possession of guns, offences they denied committing.

The prosecutor, Insp. Raphael Donny, had told the court that the defendants committed the offences with some others still at large, on Dec. 4, 2018 at Ijora-Badia, Lagos.

Donny said that the accused persons belonged to an unlawfully society, called “Eiye Fraternity,” and they were armed  with guns and other dangerous weapons.

“The defendants stormed Badia community, shooting their guns and injured many residents.

“Some of the residents alerted the police who stormed the community and arrested the accused persons while others escaped.

“Cutlasses, iron rods and a gun were recovered from them,” he said.

The offences violated Sections 42, 298 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

The News Agency of Nigeria, reports that Section 42 stipulates a three-year imprisonment for belonging to unlawful society, while Section 298 prescribes a 14 -year imprisonment  for arming self with firearm.

The magistrate, Mrs B.O. Osunsanmi, admitted the defendants to bail in the sum of N200,000 each with two sureties each in like sum and  adjourned the case until March 27 for mention.
