8 Dead as Man Detonates IED in Kano Mosque

At least eight worshippers are confirmed dead after a man, identified as Shafiu Aminu, denoted an improvised explosive device (IED) in a mosque in Kano.

The incident which occurred on Wednesday left about 30 worshippers hospitalised for in sustaining various degrees of injuries.

Shafiu Aminu,who lives in Laraba Abasawa of Gezawa Local Government Area of Kano State set the IED and closed the mosque while worshippers were saying early morning prayer.

Sources at Murtala Mohammed Hospital in Kano where the victims are receiving treatment told WikkiTimes that at around 5pm Wednesday eight people have so far died.

AIG Umar Mamman Sanda disclosed earlier while leading a delegation of security personnel, including the Police commissioner, and the Director of Department of State Services (DSS) to the Hospital that the suspect used IED instead of fire as earlier assumed.

Sanda explained further that it was not a case of terrorism but a misunderstanding around inheritance in the community.

He said, “What happened is not associated with any act of terrorism but rather, it was a skirmish that aroused as a result of inheritance distribution.

He added that the suspect was said to be not satisfied with the distribution which prompted him to react in such dastardly manner.

The suspect had since surrendered himself to the police and the police said they are doing further investigation.

According to a member of the community who asked not to be named, “the man used petrol and lit fire while the people, about 40 of them were praying. He locked the mosque after the fire.”

“It took time for people outside to get aware of the incident and rescue the victims who were struggling to break out.”
