The Jigawa State Police Command has confirmed the death of 94 people while 50 others hospitalized as a result of petrol tanker explosion in Majia town of Taura local government.
The police said the Petrol laden tanker driver enroute to Nguru Yobe state from Kano lost control and fell around 11:30pm on Tuesday in Majia, near Khadija University.
Shiisu Lawan Adam, the spokesman explained that residents scampered to collect oil that spilled across the town waterways.
Adam said despite warnings and efforts by the police to prevent locals from accessing the scene, the police were overpowered by the people when the tanker exploded leading to death of 94 people.
“It happened at about 2330hrs Near Khadija University, Majia town, Taura LGA.
“Yes, upon all warning and cordon the area by police, the locals overpowered the police andd get access to the scene”, he said.
According to him, the victims were evacuated to General Hospital Ringim and that it was agreed that a mass burial will be conducted to dead.
Lawan said so far 94 people were confirmed dead while 50 were seriously injured and are currently receiving treatments at Ringim and Hadejia General Hospitals.
Images of the scene available to WikkiTimes showed people burnt beyond recognition while some had their body parts separated by the fire.
