A week after the pump price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) was hiked, data obtained from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has not been updated to reflect the current price.
NBS still quotes N254.06 as the pump price of PMS despite the fact all petrol filing stations have adjusted the price. Similarly, NBS still quotes N4,642.27 as the cost of 5kg of cooking gas otherwise known as Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) even though the price has crashed. Daily Trust reports that the price of cooking gas and aviation fuel crashed last week.
Nigeria National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) had set the PMS price between 488 and 550, following President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s announcement of subsidy removal.
The National Labour Congress (NLC) threatened to embark on a nationwide strike alongside other unions, but it later retracted after meeting with the federal government.
The hike in the price of the commodity, however, influenced the change in the price of other products and services, especially transportation.
Inter-state travel in some northern Nigerian states went up as a result of the change in pump price. For instance, In the northeast, a journey between Gombe to Yola would cost N2,500, but it is now N3,200. Hitherto, transport fare from Lafia, the capital of Nasarawa State to Gombe was N5,000. It is now N7,000.
Instead of spending N8,000 from Minna, Niger State capital to Lokoja in Kogi states, travellers will spend N12,000, almost double the initial fare. Taraba to Abuja is now N13,000, instead of N8,000.
