Abuja Kidnappings: Police Nab Kingpin, Others at Large

The police command in Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Abuja on Friday said the operatives of the force have succeeded in arresting one of the notorious kidnap kingpin Chinaza Phillip.

The Abuja command’s Public Relations Officer SP Josephine Adeh, announced in a statement via the command’s official X account titled Arrest of Abuja Notorious Kidnapper: Chinaza Phillip.

She said the suspect was arrested by police operatives of the Kaduna State Police Command on Thursday 18th January 2024, who later handed him over to the Abuja command.

“The suspect has been handed over to FCT police Command today being Friday 19th January, 2024, and currently in police custody.

The spokesperson of the Kaduna State police command, Mansur Hassan, said Phillip and his gang members kidnapped the victim identified as Segun Akinyemi, a resident of Area 3 Garki, Abuja, taking him to Kano and were intercepted in Kaduna by operatives of the Kawo Divisional Police Station.

He said the police received information that the kidnappers and their victim were driving in a Toyota Hilux van belonging to the victim.

According to the statement, on sighting the police, one of the kidnappers fired and a gun duel ensued with the police.

“In the resulting gun duel, the victim, a certain Segun Akinyemi, of Block 10, Flat 2 FCDA Quarters, Area 3 Garki, Abuja, was rescued and one of the kidnappers, a 28 years old Chinaza Philip of Life Camp Abuja was arrested while three others escaped although trailed.”

Items recovered from the kidnappers include the vehicle belonging to the victim, two Retay G17 model pistols, one Berretta pistol, ten 9mm P.A.K ammunitions and five 9mm special ammunitions”.

“The three escapees were; Chidibere Nwodibo of Life Camp Abuja, one Auwal surname unknown and the gang leader whose identity is yet to be ascertained,” Hassan added.

There have been a series of kidnappings in the last couple of weeks in Abuja communities where several residents were abducted.

The recent one was on January 9, when the kidnappers abducted six sisters alongside their father whom they later released to get N60 million ransom.

However, they later killed one of the sisters who was a 400-level student of the Ahmadu Bello University identified as Najeebah.
