The over-dependence of the 20 local governments in Bauchi State on allocation from the Federation Account has scuttled their ability to source Internally Generated Revenue.
The situation made most of the local governments inept to keep to their mandate of paying local government workers.
The permanent Secretary Bauchi Ministry for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Usman Aliyu Kawu said this while interacting with the members of Course 44 of the National Institute of Policy and Strategic Studies, NIPS Kuru.
He said shortfall from the Federation Account coupled with the inability of most LGs in the state makes payment of the salaries of their workers a herculean task.
The Permanent Secretary said the local governments are better equipped to not only pay salaries but also be able to impact positively on the socio-economic lives of the people at the grassroots if they are able to generate IGR on their own.
He said Governor Bala Mlohammed’s led administration in Bauchi State has given an enabling playing ground for local governments in the state to deliver on their mandates to the people.
Mr Kawu said Bauchi State Government has been promptly paying SUBEB/UBEC counter funding to ensure an optimal provision of quality basic education in the state.
