The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Federal University Kashere (FUK) branch, has joined the nationwide peaceful protest to demand the Federal Government’s implementation of agreements reached with the union.
The protest, which began at the ASUU secretariat, moved through the university chancellery before ending at the main gate. Addressing members, the FUK ASUU chairman, Dr. Shehu El-Rasheed, said the demonstration followed a national directive aimed at drawing attention to unresolved issues that triggered the last eight-month strike.
The academics carried placards with inscriptions highlighting key demands, including the payment of 25% and 35% salary arrears, release of three and a half months withheld salaries, implementation of the Yayale Ahmed renegotiation agreement, and improved remuneration packages instead of loans.
Dr. El-Rasheed lamented that lecturers’ salaries have remained stagnant for over 16 years despite numerous negotiations. He warned that industrial peace cannot be guaranteed if the government continues to renege on its commitments.
Another union member, Dr. Muhammad Sheriff Ramadan, noted that poor pay forces lecturers to seek alternative sources of income, undermining their capacity to dedicate themselves fully to teaching and research.
