Autonomy: Adamawa Ready for Direct FAAC Allocations to LGs

James Iliya, the Adamawa State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, said the state government is ready for local governments to access federal allocations directly starting January 2025.

Speaking on Saturday, Iliya affirmed the state government’s support for local government autonomy, emphasising that the move aligns with its long-standing principles and practices.

“We stand with the Federal Government on local council autonomy and have always done so,” the commissioner stated, referencing the Supreme Court ruling mandating direct payments to local councils from the Federation Account.

“Our local governments have long enjoyed autonomy. Local council autonomy in Adamawa State predates the federal-level initiative recently established,” he added.

The Supreme Court ruling, issued on July 11, 2024, granted financial independence to local governments nationwide and mandated the end of state-local government joint accounts.

Effective January 2025, local councils will receive direct allocations from the Federation Account, marking the beginning of a new era free from state-level interference.

The joint account system, previously used to channel funds to local councils, has often been criticized for fostering abuse and mismanagement by state governments.
