BASUG Don Drags ASUU To Court Over Interference With Election

Dr Ibrahim Danjuma, a lecturer with the Department of Public Law, Bauchi State University Gadau, BASUG, has filed a legal suit against the national body of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU over its meddling with the electoral processes of BASUG chapter of the Union, WikkiTimes can report.

Also joined in the suit as defendants are Professor Emmanuel Osodeke National President of ASUU; Professor Lawan Abubakar Bauchi Zonal Chairman of ASUU; Dr Yusuf Musa Yahaya ASUU Chairman BASUG Chapter; ASUU Excos BASUG and ASUU’s Electoral Committee BASUG Chapter.

Dr Danjuma alleged that the ‘directives and or interference’ of the central leadership of ASUU led to the cancellation of the election of Bauchi State University Gadau Chapter of the Union earlier scheduled to take place on 18th November 2021” barely 24 hours to the date of the said election.”

He said that the actions of the National and Zonal leadership of ASUU are contrary to the provisions of Article 14 (2) (a) and (b) and Appendix II of the constitution of the Academic Staff Union of Universities 2018 as amended.

The University Don said that he is seeking from the court, an order restraining the national leadership of ASUU from further interfering with the conduct of the election of the ASUU BASUG Chapter.

Dr Danjuma said that “we want ASUU to allow the Independent Electoral Committee duly constituted by the Congress of the Union to conclude the election process lawfully initiated and in consonance with the Constitution of the Union forthwith as enshrined in Article 14 (2) (a) and (b) and Appendix II of the Constitution of the Union as amended in 2018.

The Plaintiff is also seeking a court order to direct Dr Yusuf Musa Yahaya and his backroom staff to vacate office having completed their two years tenure of office and stop parading themselves as leaders of ASUU, BASUG Chapter.

“An order directing the Independent Electoral Committee duly constituted by the Congress of the Union to immediately conclude the election process lawfully initiated and in consonance with the Constitution of the Union forthwith as enshrined in Article 14 (2) (a) and (b) and Appendix II of the Constitution of the Union 2018 (As Amended), which provide for the Supplementary Rules on Branch Election,” he said.

The suit filed before the Bauchi State High Court sitting in Azare was adjourned to the 21st December 2021.
