A member representing Ganjuwa west in the Bauchi state Assembly, Hon Yusuf Inuwa Dadiye has moved a motion seeking Bauchi State Government to restore the dignity and welfare of teachers in the State.
Leading debate on the motion, the Member lamented that the way teachers are treated is what is undermining other students to enroll and be trained as teachers because teaching is regarded as the last career option in the society.
Hon Dadiye explained that there is no sum of money that will be put into the education sector that will make meaningful impact on the condition of teachers.
“The problem in the education sector is not only in making budgetary provisions in infrastructure in schools or expending huge amount of money on curriculum development but the teacher that is responsible for the implementation of the curriculum must be fully taken care of to get the best”,he said
The Member prayed that government should provide sufficient welfare packages and incentives to teachers, construct at least one staff quarters in at least one central primary school per ward in order to restore their dignity and boost their morale so that they will stay in their duty posts.
He also requested that the State Government should rehabilitate and furnish staff quarters in all boarding secondary schools in the State and fence all secondary schools in order to improve security and make the learning environment more conducive for learning and teaching for both teachers and students.
On his part the Speaker of the assembly, Rt. Hon. Abubakar Suleiman explained that the motion doesn’t require much debate because all of them know the importance of teachers being their products.
Adding that the issue of welfare of teachers requires no second thought.
Also contributing, Hon. Abdulkadir Umar Dewu who concurred with the Speaker and the mover of the motion called for the adoption of all prayers in the motion and was seconded by Hon Saleh Hodi Jibir of Disina Constituency.
The Honourable House unanimously adopted all the prayers in the motion.
