Bauchi Assembly Rejects Candidate Nominated As Auditor General

The Bauchi State House of Assembly (BAHA) has rejected the nomination of Mr Ishaku Yankari for screening and appointment as Auditor General of the state.

Members of the House unanimously adopted a motion that outrightly rejected the nominee after Speaker Abubakar Sulaiman put it into voice vote during plenary.

WikkiTimes reports that earlier, the Chief of Staff Government House, Dr Aminu Hassan Gamawa sent the name of the nominee to the House for consideration but the lawmakers rejected it for breaching the laid down procedure of the House. Later, Secretary to the State Government, Barrister Ibrahim Mohammed Kashim resend the nomination which was accepted.

However, Chairman of the House Committee on Public Account, Mubarak Haruna while presenting his findings said the process that nominated Mr Yankari violates provisions of the Bauchi State Public Sector Audit and Other Related Matters Law, 2021 which clearly spelt out the processes and procedures of appointing Auditor General for the state.

He said seniority wasn’t taken into consideration in the process of the nomination, hence due process must be adhered to.

Mubarak added that his committee received a petition dated 24 August 2023 from one Munkaila Yakubu who claimed to be the current overseer of the office of the State Auditor-General. He alleged that all relevant provisions in the process of appointing an Auditor General were disregarded.

He said there wasn’t an advertisement for the vacant seat of Auditor General of the state in a national daily or online.

“Mr., Speaker, the Committee is robustly of the view that any law passed by this Assembly shall remain relevant and any attempt to relegate it must be resisted by the House so that our efforts would not always end in fiasco,” Mubarak said.
