Bauchi Community Protests Killing of 67-year-old Man

Residents of Yelwa-Labura, a community on the outskirt of Bauchi metropolis, have blocked the ever-busy Bauchi-Tafawa Balewa expressway following the alleged killing of one Adamu Babanta, a 67 years-old retiree.

Reports indicate that Babanta was killed on Sunday after his 68-year-old friend and neighbour Mohammed Damina knocked him down with his car.

A relative to the late Babanta who pleaded anonymity said a feud ensued between Babanta and his friend Damina tried to seduce one Khadijat, an 18-year-old daughter of the deceased through frequent visits and recharge cards, adding that this does not go down well with her father.

“Damina and my late brother were friends and neighbours. It was alleged that Galadiman attempted to have a sexual relationship with the 18 years old Khadijat, SS 2 daughter of his late friend. He had been making advances to her by sending recharge cards to her.”

“The girl reported to her mother who then told the father but he did not believe the story. However, on Sunday Damina asked Khadija to meet him at Total filling Station by 5 pm so they can go out.

“The girl informed her father who then asked her to go as planned and that he would follow behind to ascertain the situation. As expected, Galadima was waiting at the point while the father was watching as the girl arrived”.

“Galadima asked her to enter the car after he had opened the door but at that point, the father came out and confronted his friend expressing anger. Galadima then tried to run away but there was a struggle between them which led to pushing the late Adamu out of the car, he hit his head on the pavement of the road, and the back Tyre matched his legs breaking his bones. He died on the way to the hospital”, he explained.

This development triggered anger among youths in the area after sighting Mr Damina walking freely after he was arrested by the police. The angry youths took to the streets as early as 7 am to protest the act of Damina causing heavy traffic flow, calling on authorities to bring the suspect to book.
