“Let me urge our sisters and brothers not to be showing the videos and pictures of victims of rape victims on Facebook and other social media platforms because it is really a bad practice,” Hajiya Kilishi said.

Hajiya Kilishi opined that some youths who are the perpetrators of rape capitalised on the opportunity social media platforms offer to users to circulate “unfriendly pictures and videos of children who are victims of rape.”

The Chairperson describes this unspeakable act as a “bad practice” which youths should “desist from.”

“If you are helping the children, you should not show them to the world that you are helping them. We suppose to help them without showing who they are or even saying their names.

We can support them only in court; we can bring them to court to say their testimonies but we should not just show them in the social media as it is the practice nowadays,” the Chairperson added.

The Chairperson labeled broadcasting videos and pictures of victims of rape as “blackmail to the children because as mothers we are not happy with that and that is why the communities are not giving us all the cooperation that we wanted so that we bring the perpetrators to book.”

The broadcasters of such videos and pictures are not “showing the perpetrators why are they showing the victims only; why are they not offering the victims adequate support? Sadly, it is the youths that are showing these pictures,” she added.

There are instances “you can see a person having sexed with a girl or minor and is recording their video to show it to the world. What he is telling the world about that is that he is above the law,” she said.
