The Bauchi State Government has appointed a road traffic management expert, Abdulmumini Aliyu, to lead reforms at the Bauchi State Road Traffic Agency (BAROTA) following widespread allegations of financial mismanagement and administrative failure within the agency.
Mr Aliyu, who is expected to assume full responsibility for the agency’s operations, has been tasked with restoring transparency, discipline, and efficiency to BAROTA, which has faced mounting criticism from staff and the public over alleged embezzlement and poor service delivery.
In a statement on Tuesday, Mr Aliyu, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Girdo Technical and Engineering Services Limited, said a preliminary assessment revealed “a disturbing pattern of corruption, diversion of funds, and weak administrative control” under the previous management.
He lamented that the mismanagement had weakened BAROTA’s core functions, lowered staff morale, and delayed salary payments to personnel tasked with enforcing traffic regulations in the state.
Mr. Aliyu said the agency has suffered from serious institutional decay due to corruption and lack of accountability.
He noted that his immediate goal is to rebuild public confidence by introducing transparency and restoring discipline across all departments.
The newly appointed consultant urged officers and corps members who had abandoned their duties due to unpaid entitlements and poor working conditions to return, assuring them that the new administration would address their grievances.
Mr Aliyu expressed confidence that, with the support of the Bauchi State Government and key stakeholders, BAROTA would soon reclaim its role as a critical institution for maintaining road safety, efficient traffic management, and public order across the state.
He added that a comprehensive review of the agency’s systems is underway as part of broader efforts to sanitize the agency and improve service delivery.
