Bauchi Residents Travel Miles To Get Water, Yet It’s Unclean

Residents of Shuwo Village in Kariya district of Ganjuwa Local Government Area of Bauchi State have decried the lack of potable water in the community, forcing them to source water a far distance away from their homes.

Water The Needy Foundation, a not-for-profit organisation bridging the water scarcity gap — notably in the northern part of Nigeria — visited the Bauchi community, assuring them of timely intervention.

During the visit, some of the community members who spoke to the team explained that the entire community depends on a lake situated away from the community. However, it also dries off after the rainy season.

As seen in video clips uploaded on Twitter, the water is surrounded by contaminating weeds.

“During the dry season, we trek a long distance at night with our children to look for water. Sometimes we have to drill holes and wait for the water to come out,” one of the residents said.

However, the foundation is making effort to drill a well for the community as labourers could be spotted digging the well in one of the clips tweeted by the foundation.
