Bauchi SIEC Will Conduct Credible LG Elections – Chair

The Bauchi State Independent Electoral Commission (BASIEC) has assured citizens of its readiness to conduct credible local government elections.

The Executive Chairman of the Commission, Alhaji Ahmed Makama, gave the assurance during a discussion with political correspondents in his office on Monday in Bauchi.

Alhaji Makama assured that the elections scheduled for August 27th, will cover all 20 local government areas of the state.

The election will result in the emergence of 20 Chairmanship seats and 323 Councillorship positions for the state.

Bauchi State had local council polls in 2020 where the ruling party, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) won all the elective positions.

The leading opposition, All progressive Congress (APC) had rejected the outcome and described the election as not reflection of the will of the people. it cited instances of irregularities to reject the outcome of the election that it claimed BASIEC announced results while voters where on queue.

LG elections are often controversially won by the ruling party in the state with no room for accommodating oppositions.

But in preparation for a fair and transparent election, Makama said the Commission has already conducted an interactive meeting with political parties and other stakeholders where it assured them of fair play.

He emphasized that the Commission is adequately funded and equipped to fulfill its constitutional mandate.

He added that they are “ensuring no shortages of electoral materials.”

He urged political parties and candidates to thoroughly review relevant sections of the constitution and electoral guidelines to ensure compliance with the rules.

Addressing the voters, Alhaji Makama confirmed that the permanent voter cards used in previous elections will be valid for the upcoming local government elections. He called on citizens to cooperate fully to strengthen the electoral system.

Alhaji Ahmed Makama expressed his gratitude for the support and cooperation from key actors, particularly security agencies and community leaders, in ensuring a seamless election process.
