Bauchi Tax Collectors Fume Over Retrenchment

Over 20 youths temporarily employed by the Bauchi State Government as mining sector revenue collectors have expressed their dissatisfaction over the government’s decision to lay them off.

The affected workers who were formally under the Bauchi State Ministry of Natural Resources were disengaged from the service of the ministry about three months ago.

Abdullahi Hussaini, Spokesperson of the concerned youths, said life has become unbearable for them looking at the unfriendly state of the nation’s economy.

He said it is unfortunate that such a decision is coming at this point in time when concerns for more openings to absorb unemployed youths intensified, and the effect of the high rate of youths unemployment felt the more in the country in the form of the myriad insecurity problems in Nigeria at the moment.

Abdullahi said unlike government claims for being reasons for their disengagement, the decision was ill-motivated.

He, however, appeal to Governor Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed to urgently look into their plights.

Commissioner for Natural Resources Bauchi State Nurudeen Abdulhamid said the affected youths were not just laid off out of share ill-will but rather, as a deliberate government effort to sanitise the revenue collection system used in the state.
