The Joint Action Committee (JAC) of Academic and Non-Academic Staff of state-owned Tertiary institutions in Bauchi have declared a two-week warning strike effective from Monday, December 16.
The declaration of the warning strike was the outcome of an emergency meeting of the JAC at the end of an earlier 21-day ultimatum issued.
The institutions include Abubakar Tatari Ali Polytechnic, Bauchi; A.D Rufai College of Education, Legal and General Studies, Misau; Bauchi State College of Agriculture, Bauchi; Aminu Saleh College of Education, Azare and Adamu Tafawa Balewa College of Education, Kangere.
The Chairperson of JAC, Comrade Abubakar Ahmed, at a press conference held NUJ Secretariat in Bauchi explained that the committee had demanded the implementation of the new salary structure for its members by the state government.
Recall that the state-owned Sa’adu Zungur University (SAZU) academic staff have declared an indefinite strike over failure of the state government to resolve their longstanding contentions.
WikkiTimes reports that the state government had recently constituted a nine-member visitation panel to visit the University in an effort to put a halt to the ongoing strike.
Ahmed stressed that the Congress met to assess the level of commitment by the government to an amicable resolution of the issue but lamented that the effort was not encouraging enough.
He added that the Committee acknowledged the meagre addition to the salaries of members in the November payment which he said fell short of their expectations.
The JAC also frowned at the attitude of the government for not engaging its leadership throughout the period of ultimatum to resolve the issues at stake and therefore resolved to proceed on the two-week warning strike commencing on Monday, 16th December 2024.
