Bauchi to vaccinate 1.6 million livestock

Bauchi State Government says it is targeting 1.6 million livestock for vaccination against contagious diseases in the state.

The state Commissioner for Agriculture and Natural Resources, Alhaji Yakubu Kirfi made the disclosure at the flag off ceremony of the 2018  Livestock Vaccination Campaign in Chinade on Monday .

“The livestock comprise of one million  cattle, 200,000 goats and sheep as well as 400,000 chickens targeted  to be vaccinated at the venue of the  exercise in Chinade Katagum Local Government,” he said.

Kirfi  said the exercise was geared toward empowering livestock farmers and enhancing economic growth of the state.

In his remark, Governor Mohammed Abubakar of Bauchi State said: “The present administration is fully aware of the significant role of the veterinary sub-sector in the area of agriculture, public health, preventive, medicine and food security,” he said.

Abubakar, who was represented by his deputy, Mr Audu  Katagum, said the subsector had been playing a vital role in the control of emerging and re-emerging diseases, most of which are zoonotic in nature.

According to him, the Federal Ministry of Agriculture  in collaboration with the state government has recently constructed a modern poultry market and abattoir complex at the Muda Lawal Market in the state capital.

Gov. Abubakar said that his administration attaches importance to manpower development of the subsector by sustaining the Veterinary Students Manpower Scheme in spite of the embargo on employment in the state.

He said  that the state currently has about 94 veterinary students in various universities within and outside the country.

According to him, the state is one of the leading livestock producers in the country with about 75 per cent farming population engaging in one form of livestock business or the other.

“Records from the Federal Department of Livestock indicate that Bauchi State has over one million heads of cattle, 3,481,285 sheep and 5,213,423 goats.

“Considering the increase of livestock in the state, it is imperative to improve the tempo of yearly vaccination campaign of livestock against preventable diseases,” he said.

The governor explained that  his administration’s policy on interventions in the Agricultural Entrepreneurship Development Programme cuts across all areas of agriculture.

He, however,  commended  health related professional bodies for complementing the efforts of the state government in the area of animal health and production.

Also, Abdullahi Abubakar, the State Chairman of Miyatti Allah, a Cattle Breeders group,  commended the state government for considering Chinade as the venue for the flag off of this year’s livestock vaccination exercise.

He urged government to sustain the vaccination exercise to enable cattle breeders  stay in one place. (NAN)
