Benue Doctors Threaten Strike Over Abduction of Member

Medical doctors the umbrella of Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) in Benue State have threatened to embake on strike over the abduction of one of its member, Dr Asemah, in Sankara axis of the state.

The association disclosed this in a statement by its chairman, Dr Mshakuma Anenga, on wednesday.

“Dr Asema has devoted himself to the service of the people for several years. His kidnap made it the second abduction of a medical doctor in the past three months within our state,” the statement read.

The doctors expressed fear, noting that the “pattern cannot be ignored, as it now seems like doctors, who have given their lives to the service of humanity, are being targeted for kidnap in the state.”

The doctor who serves at General Hospital Sankara was reportedly abducted while carrying out supervision work for a malaria programme in primary health care center.

While calling for a swift reaction by the state government, the NMA threatened to down tool if the abducted doctor is not released.

“The union calls on the state Governor, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia, and top politicians, Senator Emmanuel Udende representing Benue North East Senatorial District and Chief of Staff to the Governor, Paul Biam, to intervene and ensure the immediate release of the abducted medical doctor,” it stated.
