Benue IDPs to Return Home as FG Begins Housing Project

The Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in Benue State who have been displaced by insecurity and flooding have expressed sighs of relief as the federal government lays the foundation for the construction of resettlement houses for the displaced persons.

The displaced persons who spoke to WikkTimes in a telephone conversation expressed joy as the federal government has included them in its plans.

The IDPs who reside in the Tse-Yandev IDP camp narrated their ugly experience with shelter for the past three years that they have lived in the camp under the rain and sun with a proper place to lay their head.

Antwen Kwaghando 60 years from Yalewata in Guma local of the state expresses relief with the new development as she expressed mixed feelings with the new move by the federal government.

The 60-year-old mother of three who has lived in the camp for 4 years and counting remained optimistic that the housing units for the displaced persons will be shared in such a way that she will benefit her three children.

She narrated that all her years in the camp she had lived in a place she called a room made with lather and trash grasses

“I’m happy that the government has started the project it will be a joy for me to leave here the only fear I have now is that most times when the government initiates a project the less privileged don’t always benefit but I hope this time will be different “

Philip Iorver, 35, who spoke through an interpreter explained how the project if completed will help him as he has been contending with taking care of his children’s shelter for the past years.

He spoke with optimism that the current move by the government would help his family have a better place to lay their heads after years of living in the camp.

On Thursday the minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation laid the foundation for cluster settlements for the IDPs in the state.

The construction will be taking place in Mbagwen in the Makurdi Local Government Area of the state and will help the displaced persons in the state who have cried for a long to return home.

“It is time for Benue people who have cried for too long to enjoy. This is the beginning of a journey to return home.”
