Bill To Rename BASUG To Sa’adu Zungur University Scales Second Reading

The bill for a law to rename Bauchi State University Gadau to Sa’adu Zungur University has passed second reading in the Bauchi State House of Assembly. 

The bill which seeks to repeal the law establishing Bauchi State University Gadau was read on the floor of the House on Wednesday on in a letter Governor Bala Mohammed transmitted to the lawmakers. 

The Wednesday’s sitting of the House which was presided over by the Speaker, Hon Abubakar Sulaiman, come at the tail of over three months strike by the Parliamentary Staff Association of Nigeria, PAN.

Hon Tijjani Aliyu, the Majority Leader of the House who read the governors’ correspondence for the first time in the House also moved that the bill “should undergo second reading.”

The honourable members of the House voted in favour of the bill after the Speaker throw the motion to the floor of House for a voice vote. 

The House sent the bill to the Committee on Education. The committee was given three weeks to report back to the House. 

WikkiTimes recalled that this development came after the Governor vetoed the renaming of the state varsity after the late elder statesman, Malam Sa’adu Zungur as a way to immortalised his contributions to the education sector of Northern Nigeria.
