Breaking: Bauchi Cleric Accused of “Public Disturbance” Remanded in Prison

Dr Idris Abdulaziz, a Bauchi-based Islamic cleric has been remanded in the correctional centre for alleged “public disturbance and inciting public unrest.”

In a document obtained by WikkiTimes, Fityanul Islam of Nigeria, an Islamic association, had called for his arrest over hate speeches against prominent clerics and Prophet Muhammad.

Abdulaziz who is a Chief Imam of the Dutsen Tanshi Jumaat mosque had on Monday honoured the police invitation before being charged to court over the allegation.

Confirming the incident, his counsel Barrister Umar Hassan told WikkiTimes that his client was charged in the Chief Magistrate Court No.1 on the available charge.

He noted that the judge withheld the bail application and ordered that the defendant would be kept in the correctional centre and be made available to the court on Tuesday.

Last month, the cleric in his Ramadan sermon allegedly blasphemed the Prophet. Afterwards, he was criticised by some Islamic scholars.

He was, however, backed by other sections that his words were nothing but facts.

Details later…
