Buhari to Address Nigerians 7 am Today

Nigeria’s President, Muhammadu Buhari will address Nigerians at 07:00 am today, according to his Special Adviser on Media & Publicity, Femi Adesina.

Adesina announced this late Wednesday, calling on media houses to stay tuned.

“Television, radio stations and other electronic media outlets are enjoined to hook up to the network services of the Nigerian Television Authority and Radio Nigeria for the broadcast,” he stated.

WikkiTimes understands that the broadcast is connected to the recent hardship the Buhari administration subjects Nigerians to. It was reported that Godwin Emiefele, Governor, Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) met with the president yesterday following a court sitting over a lawsuit bordering on the acceptance of old naira notes that were redesigned last year.

The CBN had redesigned the country’s high denominations — N1,000, N500 and N200 — with the aim of running a cashless economy while it envisioned that the policy would tackle counterfeits, insecurity and vote buying among others.

Since the redesigned notes surfaced in the public domain, Nigerians have been going through several hurdles to access them. With that, the CBN insisted that the old notes would no longer be recognised as legal tenders after February 10 deadline. Hitherto, it gave January 31 as a deadline for the cash swap.

Following a lawsuit filed by governors of Kogi, Kaduna and Zamfara states, the supreme court, in an ex parte judgement, temporarily restrained the federal government from imposing the February 10, deadline pending the hearing of the matter on February 15. But the case would later be adjourned when the court sat yesterday.

Despite the court’s order, commercial banks and CBN insisted on the deadline. This further frustrate Nigerians as business owners continued to reject old notes.

WikkiTimes had earlier reported how the policy had grounded sales in many markets in Bauchi, including the ones in the metropolitan areas.
