The CLEEN Foundation has empowered 30 local NGOs in Bauchi State to promote policing and accountability in the justice system.
CLEEN executive director, Gad Peter, disclosed this at a workshop organized as part of the CLEEN’s efforts to Justice Sector Reform in Bauchi.
Peter said that the programme involves comprehensive training and interaction sessions designed to ensure that Nigerians are knowledgeable about the law and to ensure that both perpetrators and victims are adequately protected and compensated.
He added that the workshop aims to bolster the capacity of NGOs and their staff, fostering legal awareness and engaging key stakeholders like the Nigeria Police, Correctional Service, EFCC, ICPC, and other agencies.
“We are committed to ensuring the law functions effectively. With the support of 30 NGOs, representatives from the Nigeria Bar Association (NBA), the National Human Rights Commission, and the Media Head Council, we aim to assist those who cannot afford legal representation. These agencies will provide support to ensure that even without financial resources, individuals can be fully represented in court,” Peter said.
“Over the years in Nigeria, we have enacted various laws, yet many people remain unaware of their existence or how to apply them. We hope that by the end of these training sessions and engagements, the NGOs will be well-equipped to address different aspects of the law in Bauchi State, thereby enhancing legal awareness and application within the state”.
