Court Sentences Man to Death by Hanging for Murder

The Bauchi State High Court No. 9, presided over by Justice Sa’ad Muhammad Sambuwal, has sentenced Usman Abdullahi to death by hanging for the killing of Zaidu Adamu Kofar Dumi.

The court found the defendant guilty of causing grievous harm and culpable homicide, offenses contrary to Sections 239 and 221 of the Penal Code.

The incident, which occurred on May 12, 2021, was reported by Adamu Mohammed Kofar Dumi, the father of the deceased, at the Police A Division in Bauchi.

According to the prosecution counsel, Barrister Abubakar Ahmed Kobi from the State Ministry of Justice, a misunderstanding arose between the defendant, Zaidu Adamu, and his friend, Ziya’u Abdulhadi, over a handset charger. In the heat of the argument, the defendant used a knife to stab Zaidu multiple times, inflicting grievous injuries.

Zaidu was rushed to the Specialist Hospital in Bauchi, where by a medical doctor confirmed his death.

The defense counsel, Barrister Naziru Umar, presented two witnesses and pleaded for leniency on behalf of the accused.

However, after hearing submissions from both parties and reviewing their final written addresses, Justice Sambuwal delivered his judgment, convicting Usman Abdullahi of culpable homicide.

The judge sentenced him to death by hanging, stating that he would be “hanged by the neck until his death.”
