COVID-19: Group distributes foodstuffs to 200 vulnerable in Kwara

The Harmony Social Club in Ilorin on Monday distributed foodstuffs as palliative to no fewer than 200 vulnerable residents of the state in an effort to bring succour to them.

The President of the club, Mr Chris Owoeye, disclosed this to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Surulere Community of  Olunlade area of Ilorin after the house-to-house exercise.

Owoeye said that the gesture was to assist the widows and the aged in the area to survive the tough time occasioned by the fight against COVID-19.

“We decided to help the needy at this difficult time by assisting them in the best way possible we can by giving them foodstuffs.

“We want to put smiles on their faces, so we selected those that we think need it most.

“We don’t give money to anybody, but we try as much as possible to give out food to our people.

“We try to be selective to some extent in our sharing formula. We give to our elderly ones in the community.

“Also, widows as well the poorest of the poor among us benefited from the palliative measures,” he said.

The president added that the items were from the collective efforts and sacrifices made by members of the club to ensure they touched some lives in one way or the other.

Owoeye called on individuals to support and give to the needy in their environments and stop waiting for government to feed everybody.

The president also advised the public to stay safe and respect the rules of safety by consistently using face masks, washing their hands and as well as maintaining social distancing.

NAN reports that items distributed include: Gari {cassava flake}, Rice, Beans, Spaghetti and vegetable oil.

The Chairman of Surulere Community, Alhaji Ganiyu Zubar, commended the group for their support and contributions to the welfare of the community.

“We, the Surulere Community, appreciate your kind gesture for putting smiles on the faces of our ageing people and the sacrifice made to give out,” he said.

Zubar, also appealed to other clubs and associations to emulate the gesture by being supportive to the community.

One of the beneficiaries, Mrs Iyabo Aliyu, described the group as ‘a God-sent group’ for putting a smile on her face at this tough time.

“I didn’t have anything to eat and I have been thinking of what to eat before God sent them to me. Thank you and God bless you,” Aliyu said. (NAN)
