COVID-19: Plateau prosecutes 9 persons over lockdown violation

Authorities in Plateau State have convicted nine people through its mobile court sitting in the magistrate court west of mine Jos for violating the stay-at-home directives imposed by the state government.

The convicts were however, placed on community services for failing to pay a prescribed fine labelled on them by the magistrate.

WikkiTimes correspondent observed the enforcement of the law to service community by the Nigerian Correctional Service, Plateau state Command.

The Nigerian Correctional Service, Plateau state Command has set a precedence towards the implementation of the new correctional act as amended that supplements decongestion of the correctional centers with community service on minor offences.

Following the directives by the Plateau state government on the stay at home lockdown policy, violators were to either pay the sum of ten thousand naira or serve a jail term.

Consequently, the nine violators were arrested and prosecuted by the mobile court and convicted for not adhering to the directives.

The deputy Comptroller of the Correctional Service, Plateau state Command, DCC Folorenso Marks explained that the lockdown violators were directed to serve community on the streets.

The deputy Comptroller further explained that the convicts were directed to serve community on the streets of Ahmadu Bello way, Ibrahim Taiwo and Terminus market.

The lockdown order which began less than a week ago have seen some defaulters subjected to payment of fine or attracting jail term and in some instances serving community for the offence committed.
