Nigeria’s former ambassador to Congo Brazzaville, Amb. Jolaade Onipede, has called for a review of Nigeria’s electoral process.
Onipede made the call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria, (NAN) in Ilasa Ekiti, on Saturday, in reaction to the conduct of the 2019 General Elections.
The diplomat said though Nigeria’s electoral process witnessed an improvement in the 2019 polls, there was still need to upgrade to international standards.
She said electoral efficiency would further be enhanced if an electronic voting system, that would enable Nigerians to vote from any part of the world, was adopted.
Onipede commended the Independent National Electoral Commission, (INEC) for insisting on the use of card readers during the elections.
“It is also commendable that INEC issued a policy statement insisting that no election result obtained through duress will be accepted.
“INEC’s position serves as a caution to politicians planning to twist the election process and get their wish above the decision of the electoral umpire,” she said.
She further commended President Muhammadu Buhari, for his honesty and neutrality, saying, “this has brought credibility to the electoral process”
The ex-envoy called on leaders elected during the elections to evolve programmes and policies that would positively affect the people.
“I generally believe that the election has been peaceful across the country, we give credit to God for this,” Onipede said
