Doctors Carried out Second Conjoined Twins Operations in ATBUTH Bauchi

Another conjoined twin operation was successfully carried out by team of surgeons from the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa university Teaching hospital Bauchi, when little Abubakar Sani, born as a heterpropagus conjoined twin, was separated.

Little Abubakar sani was born two months ago in Azare, Katagum Local Government Area of Bauchi State through normal delivery and noticing his condition, the parents took him to Federal Medical Center (FMC) Azare, where they were later referred to ATBUTH for possible operation.

After thorough pre operative evaluation and discussions among members of multi- disciplinary team, Abubakar was scheduled for the surgery.

The team lead, consultant paediatrician Dr kefas J. Bwala said in Abubakar’s case , which in “medical science is being referred as asymmetric conjoined twin, the other twin may not actually be alive and that is why it is known as a parasitic twin’.

Abubakar was wheeled into the theatre at about 9.20am Thursday and at 12. 50pm the consultant came out smiling , which indicates that the surgery went well.

Dr Kefas Bwala said the operation was successful and Abubakar is expected to recover within the period of 10 days.

While the surgery lasted the parents spent the entire waiting period praying for their son to come out alive.

The boy according to the consultant is at the intensive care unit and is in stable condition.

The team of surgeons was led by the consultant paediatrician Dr Kefas John Bwala, other members are a Neurosurgeon, Anaesthetist, general Surgeons from federal medical centre Gombe and Specialist hospital Bauchi.

This is the second of such surgery carried out at the hospital.
