Prominent Nigerian political figures, Atiku Abubakar and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, have condemned the brutal killing of 16 northern travelers in Uromi, Edo State. The two leaders have called for a transparent investigation and swift justice to address the barbaric mob violence that claimed the lives of mostly Hausa hunters.
The victims, who were traveling from Port Harcourt to Kano for Sallah celebrations, were reportedly attacked by a mob after being falsely accused of involvement in kidnapping.
Atiku Calls for Justice and Security Reforms
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, who contested in the last general elections as the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate, expressed profound sorrow over the tragic incident.
“I am deeply saddened by reports of the tragic killing of some hunters in Edo State. My heartfelt condolences go out to their families and loved ones,” Atiku wrote on his Facebook page.
He emphasized the need for a transparent and impartial investigation to ensure justice is served and to prevent future occurrences of mob violence.
“The protection of innocent lives must remain paramount, and I urge the authorities to act swiftly and decisively to prevent a recurrence of jungle justice. Justice must not only be done but must be seen to be done to restore public confidence in our security institutions,” Atiku stated.
Kwankwaso Decries Barbarity of Jungle Justice
Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, the New Nigerian Peoples Party (NNPP) presidential candidate in the last general elections, also condemned the mob action, describing it as barbaric.
In his Facebook post, he highlighted the right of all Nigerians to travel freely without fear of harassment or intimidation.
“I am concerned by the harrowing display of mob injustice on 16 travelers from Northern Nigeria in Edo State. This tragedy, which unfolded on March 27, 2025, in the Udune Efandion community of Uromi, is another sad reminder of the barbarity of jungle justice,” Kwankwaso remarked.
He urged authorities to launch a full-scale investigation and bring the perpetrators to justice.
“While praying for the repose of the victims, I extend my condolences to their families, the Kano State Government, and other affected states,” he added.
Amnesty International and Arewa Youths Demand Accountability
Amnesty International has joined calls for an investigation into the lynching of the 16 travelers, emphasizing the need for accountability and justice.
Similarly, Arewa Youths have condemned the mob action in Edo State and demanded immediate justice, reflecting the growing national outcry over the gruesome killings.
President Tinubu Orders Manhunt for Perpetrators
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has condemned the brutal killing of the travelers in the Uromi community of Esan North Local Government Area in Edo State. He directed security agencies to launch an immediate manhunt for the perpetrators.
Expressing shock over the incident, President Tinubu ordered the police and other law enforcement agencies to conduct a swift and thorough investigation to bring the suspects to justice.
According to a statement by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu extended condolences to the families of the victims. He assured them that his administration will not tolerate acts of violence and that the criminals responsible for the killings will face the full weight of the law.
The President reaffirmed that jungle justice has no place in Nigeria, emphasizing that all citizens have the right to move freely and safely across the country.
Government Assurance and Collaboration
Commending Edo Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, and local community leaders for their swift intervention, President Tinubu acknowledged their efforts in preventing the escalation of tension in the area.
The Federal Government, he reiterated, remains committed to ensuring the safety and security of all Nigerians and will continue working with state governments and security agencies to uphold law and order.
