El-Zakzaki’s IMN Demands Unconditional Release of Convicted Kano Cleric, Abduljabbar

Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN) otherwise known as Shiite has demanded an unconditional release of convicted Kano State-based cleric, Sheikh Abduljabbar Nasiru Kabara.

WikkiTimes had reported that a Shariah High Court in Kano sentenced Sheikh Abduljabar to death by hanging after he was found guilty of making indecent comments against Prophet Muhammad (SAW). Justice Ibrahim Sarki Yola pronounced Abduljabbar guilty of the crime.

A statement signed by Halima Aliyu for the group on Wednesday described the verdict as questionable insisting that it was orchestrated for the personal and political interest of the state governor, Abdullahi Umar Ganduje.

“We write to draw the attention of the public to a questionable court judgment sentencing Sheikh Abduljabbar Nasiru Kabara, Kano to death by hanging; and to seek the intervention of all people of conscience for the unconditional release of the cleric.

“Sheikh Abduljabbar is well known for researching Islamic history and the authenticity of traditions reported on the Holy Prophet Muhammad (SAWA). He is known for the presentation of his research findings through lectures and book publications. Prominent books authored by the cleric include Muqaddimatu Azifa and Jawful Fara,” the group said.

IMN alleged that it was also the conspiracy of some scholars who ganged up against the convict for sharing different views to stop him from propagating his knowledge.

“Obviously, it is the group of the aforementioned scholars that worked together with the Ganduje APC-led administration in Kano to frame up baseless allegations against the cleric and the Kano State Government used the allegations to frame up blasphemy charges against him.

“We believe that the allegations and charges filed against Sheikh Abduljabbar are baseless and the court ruling delivered against him is politically motivated,” it added.

IMN, therefore called for an appeal against the ruling of Justice Yola of Kano, the presiding judge.

The El-Zakzaki’s IMN had last year called on Dr Ganduje, to drop the charges of blasphemy against the embattled cleric and release him.

The controversial Islamic cleric, Sheikh Abduljabbar, was arrested by the police in July 2021 in Kano over alleged blasphemy against the noble Prophet, a development some people said was politicised.
