Election Tribunal Schedules May 8 to Hear Petition Against President-elect, Tinubu

The election petition tribunal has scheduled May 8 to hear petitions challenging the victory of Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the February 25th presidential poll.

According to a news report, pre-hearing session is said to commence on Monday. The hearing is to clarify if there are any applications before the main hearing will start. A timetable will be scheduled for the hearing of the substantive matters.

PETITIONS AGAINST TINUBU

Tinubu, according to the result declared by Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), won the presidential election with 8.8 million votes to beat the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential flag bearer, Atiku Abubakar, and the Labour Party’s Peter Obi, who came second and third, respectively.

Following that, five different parties filed petitions against Tinubu and INEC. Although, INEC had asked the court to ignore them.

For Instance, in their petition, Labour Party (LP) and its presidential candidate argued that Tinubu “was not duly elected by the majority of the lawful votes cast at the time of the election.”

They also argued that Kashim Shettima, Tinubu’s running mate had a double nomination in contravention of the electoral act.

Obi, however, urged the court to either declare him the president-elect, in the belief that he scored the majority of the lawful votes during the election, or nullify the entire election and order a fresh election.
