Elephants Destroy Bauchi Cassava farms

Herd of elephants from Yankari Game Reserve have destroyed several cassava farms worth millions of naira in Shafan-Duguri  Of Alkaleri local government area of Bauchi State. 

In 2021, the Elephants destroyed over thirty cassava farms in the area leaving the affected farmers counting the loss of over N40,000,000. This year, they have destroyed over five Cassava farms worth over N6,000,000 thus far.  

Village Head of Bandibir Shafan-Duguri Alhaji Yusuf Idris said this in an interview with WikkiTimes in Bauchi. 

He said the incessant destruction of cassava farms by the Elephants is fast making Cassava cultivation in the area unlucrative, adding many farmers now think twice about cultivating the product. 

The Village Head said that there is an urgent need to salvage Cassava farmers in the area from the excesses of the Elephants. 

“Herd of elephants from Yankari Game Reserve destroyed our Cassava farms. 

“The Elephants in their numbers have destroyed more than five farmlands with an estimated loss of more than six million naira worth of Cassava,” he said.

Alhaji Idris said the community took all the necessary measures to halt the Elephants from destroying their Casava farms prove abortive. 

On his part, Nurudeen Nuhu Shafan Duguri, a victim of the Elephant’s destruction said he lost more than one hundred bags of cassava to the Elephants.
