A civil engineer, Abubakar Ramadhan, has identified real reasons behind incessant building collapses in nigeria.
Engr. Ramadhan decried the recurring building collapse leading to loss of lives and property.
WikkiTimes reports that at least 22 school children died in a school building collapse in Jos, the Plateau state capital earlier in July..
Similarly, a day after, part of a two storey building collapsed in Kubwa, Abuja, where several people were trapped in the rubbles.
The Council of the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN) reported that between January to July 2024, Nigeria has recorded 22 building collapses. These had led to the loss of lives and properties with many hospitalized.
In an interview with WikkiTimes, Engr Ramadhan, noted that lack of maintenance and using substandard materials are the main forces of building collapse in Nigeria.
The Kano based Civil Engineer gave an insight on possible reasons for building collapses and what can be done to mitigate it.
“The problem with our buildings is that we hardly pay attention to its maintenance. Sometimes you will see a building glaringly at the verge of collapse with so many cracks and crooked appearance yet people are still living in them. That is very ignorant and dangerous,” he said.
“All these buildings that have been collapsing recently must have shown one warning sign or the other but people just turned a blind eye,” he added.
According to him, other factors that may lead to building collapses include but are not limited to inadequate design, poor drainage system and natural disasters.
“Buildings can also collapse due to earthquakes which are natural disasters,” he added.
While identifying ways to address the problem, Abubakar highlighted that there is a need for relevant regulatory bodies in the country to be vigilant of building systems and sanction those who fail to comply with proper building ethics.
“Sometimes it feels like the people that live in those buildings don’t care. So it is the duty of the government to enforce measures so as to address this problem. When laws are put into place and proper effort is put into implementing them, we will not be having as many building collapses,” he added.
