FACT-CHECK: Video Showing APC Chair Beaten By Irate Youths Is Not From Nigeria

A video showing a man bound to a tree and whipped by angry youths, has circulated online with a claim that the All Progressive Congress, APC, local government chairman in Northern Nigeria was beaten for looting palliatives.

The 2:30-minute video which was posted on X (formerly Twitter) showed the man was tied to a tree, half-naked and was whipped by the villagers.

An X user @EPhilips5 posted the video on April, 2 with a caption read;

“APC local government chairman who sold palliatives meant for his local government was seriously beaten by angry youths in the Northern part, this is a lesson to our leaders that anything can happen 😭😮”.

The video clip has been viewed by 1.3 million, 2,311 reposts, 403 quotes, 7,020 likes and 1,245 bookmarks as of press time.

THE FINDINGS

Findings by WikkiTimes indicate that the viral clip is misleading.

WikkiTimes subjected screenshots of the video to a Reverse Image Search and Yandex and found that an old version of the clip was posted on X on 14, July 2023.

Further, Haber3 reports that a punishment was given to the headman who allegedly stole the money collected to drill a water well in his village in Kenya.

THE VERDICT

The claim that the APC chairman was beaten by youths in Northern Nigeria is misleading; findings show that the village head is from Kenya.
