On Friday 13th Sept. this year, The Kano State governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, disclosed that the state will be the first to implement the new N70,000 minimum wage.
The governor disclosed this in Kaduna at a Michael Imoudu National Institute for Labour Studies workshop on “Conflict Management from Harmonious Industrial Labour Relations Environment” organised for the Kano State Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and its affiliates.
Represented by the Head of Civil Service, Kano State, Abdullahi Musa, the governor confirmed that the state will pioneer the implementation of the new minimum wage.
“To confirm that and to demonstrate the kind of seriousness the government have on the implementation of the new minimum wage, we are going to be in Kaduna for a retreat, particularly to address issues that have to do with minimum wage in Kano State”, he said.
Governor Yusuf had earlier in August, 2024 inaugurated advisory committee on the implementation of the new minimum wage in Kano State.
“The entire advisory committee is here in Kaduna to discuss on the issue of minimum wage to be able to conclude, and hopefully by next week we will deliver our submission/report to the governor for possible action. So by grace of God we will be the first to key in, in making this possible”.
Leadership online published the story which quoted the Governor make the claim.

Verification
However, Wikki fact check shows that both Adamawa and Edo States have already begun paying their workers the new minimum wage.
Adamawa Stat Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri has approved the payment of the N70,000 minimum wage to workers on both the state and local government payrolls.
According to the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) Chairman in Adamawa, Comrade Emmanuel Fashe, state government workers started receiving the new wage in August 2024, while local government workers will begin in September.
Edo State
The Edo State Government, under Governor Godwin Obaseki, has been paying the N70,000 minimum wage since May 2024.
During the inauguration of the Labour House in Benin City, the governor confirmed the wage increase from N40,000 to N70,000 to alleviate the economic hardship faced by workers.
Conclusion
While Kano State is making efforts to implement the new minimum wage, it is inaccurate to claim that it will be the first to do so, as Adamawa and Edo States have already begun the payment.
