FG provides patient’s safety intervention skills

The Federal Government says it has provided effective leadership direction and conducive environment for changes in medical practice, regulation and coordination of patients’ safety interventions.

The Minister of Health, Dr Isaac Adewole, said this when he spoke on “Patient’s Safety in Nigeria” at the Igbinedion University, Okada, on Friday.

He said the ministry was also in the process of providing strategic directions and sustained political will for the institutionalization of patient’s safety culture in the healthcare system.

“Recently, the ministry launched important policy and strategy document for the effective management of Reproductive, Maternal, Newborn, Vhild and Adolescent Health (RMNCAH).

“In a short while, the national Patient’s Safety guide would be developed. This will be followed by capacity building of health workers, the use of safe and suitable infrastructure as well as ensuring maintenance culture and safety,” the minister said.

Adewole noted that the field of patient’s safety had emerged in response to the high prevalence of avoidable adverse events.

He added that many organizations do not use a clear definition or have a clear model of understanding of the field.
