Fire Destroys Shops at Kano Largest Textile Market

A Saturday night fire outbreak has destroyed shops in the largest Kano textile market, Kantin-Kwari.

WikkiTimes learnt that multimillion naira properties belonging to shop owners were burnt to ashes in the evening fire incident.

A shop owner in the market, Alhaji Hamisu Sabo, said, “Somebody called me around 7:30pm today (Saturday) that the market is on fire. On getting there, it was only two shops that were already been burnt down, but all things are in control. So, we are trying to look at the actual cause of the fire outbreak.”

WikkiTimes later gathered that the fire extended to Gidan Inuwa Mai-mai, Gidan Bayajida and layin Gidan Alpha Wali.

Many shops have been severely affected.

Alh. Balarabe Tatari, chairman of the Kwari Market said that firefighters from Kwari fire station, Singa Market station and Kano fire service headquarters have intervened to put off the fire.

Alh. Tatari added that the cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained.

Authorities are yet to speak on the incident as the time of filling this report.

Kano state plays host to one of the major textile business hubs in Nigeria and sub-Saharan Africa.

Over the years, Kano markets have lost wealth estimated to be in billions of naira in fire incidents across major markets in the state.
