At least five persons were feared dead as a canoe carrying twenty passengers capsized in Nahuce village of Taura LGA, Jigawa State.
The canoe carrying 20 persons enroute to Nahuce village capsized in a crossover in Gamoda river, where rescue effort is ongoing to save other passengers.
Confirming the incident to WikkiTimes, Lawan Shiisu Adam, Jigawa State Police Command’s spokesman said the incident happened around 12 noon of Thursday, adding that good Samaritans are currently searching the water to find the other missing passengers.
“Today, Thursday, August 08, 2024, at about 1200hrs, information from a reliable source revealed that, a canoe conveying twenty (20) passengers to cross over Gamoda river at Nahuce village in Taura LGA capsized”.
“Upon receipt of the report, a team of Police officers in collaboration with local divers and good Samaritans raced to the scene for a rescue mission. Regretfully, five (5) of the passengers were dead”, he said.
Adam added that intense efforts are being made to rescue the remaining passengers.
Recall that a similar mishap had last month claimed two lives in a canoe mishap in Auyo local government of the State.
A canoe loaded with twenty passengers capsized in River Kwalgwai, a community in Auyo.
The canoe, which was ferrying traders enroute from Hadin village, capsized due to a powerful water wave and overloaded with 20 passengers.
