Following increased in rainfall, flood has destroyed over 210 houses and damaged thousands of hectares of farmland with estimated loss in millions of naira.
Dr. Umar Gabarin, the Coordinator of the Bauchi State Emergency Management Agency, disclosed that the flood has affected almost every part of the state.
Dr. Gabarin, however, identified Cheledi in Kirfi Local Government Area (LGA), Magama Gumau in Toro LGA, Kari in Darazo LGA, and Zindi in Misau LGA as the worst-hit communities in the state.
He noted that seven other LGAs, including Itas Gadau, Jama’are, Ganjuwa, Shira, Zaki, Warji, and Katagum, are at high to moderate risk of further flooding, making the total nine.
He noted that many residents disregarded warnings from the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), which had provided specific locations and times for heavy rainfall projections. The neglect of these warnings has contributed to the severity of the disaster.
Dr. Gabarin advised residents living in riverine areas to relocate to safer locations as the peak of the rainy season approaches.
