FLOOD: 362 Communities in Kano State at High Risk – NEMA

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has issued a flood warning, stating that 362 vulnerable communities in 14 local governments in Kano State are at high risk of flooding.

According to NEMA’s Director-General, Mrs. Zubaida Umar, during a one-day stakeholders meeting on Thursday in Kano, the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency has predicted that 3,749,200 people are at risk of flood in the state.

NEMA said the affected LGAs that are highly vulnerable Rimin Gado, Tofa, Kabo, Madobi, Garun Malam, Bebeji, Rano, Dawakin Kudu, Warawa, Wudil, Sumaila, Ajingi, Kura and Dala.

“The floods of 2012 and 2022 have highlighted the critical need for coordinated efforts across all levels of government in managing disaster risks. Improper solid waste disposal affects the environment, human health, and the economy,” said Mrs. Umar.

NEMA, therefore, urges residents to desist from dumping refuse on roads and waterways. The agency has engaged in extensive planning and analysis, stakeholders’ technical meetings, and an emergency coordination forum to ensure effective disaster management.
