Flood Imminent in Riverbanks, Coastal Settlements, NIWA Warns

The National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) has advised people living along riverbanks and flood prone communities to relocate to highlands due to imminent threat of flood.

NIWA warned that its gauge readers have confirmed fast-rising water levels across rivers and lagoons which will likely cause flooding.

The agency, in a public announcement to the public, said people living in the affected areas should start immediate evacuation to avert loss of lives and properties.

“The National Inland Waterways Authority wishes to inform the general public that our gauge readers have confirmed the country’s fast-rising water levels across rivers and lagoons”.

“Consequently, the Authority calls on all persons living at the riverbanks across Nigeria to start preparing to relocate to higher grounds to avoid loss of lives and properties in the advent of a flood”, the public notice said.
