FOCUS: ‘Many Girls Do That’ — Kannywood Actress Speaks on Her Leaked Video

In the aftermath of her leaked video disrupting public spaces, Kannywood actress and singer, Safiyya Yusuf has spoken about how it demoralized her. It is a no-offence for many girls to save their nudes on their phones, she believes.

In an exclusive interview with BBC Hausa, the Kano-born actress also known as Safara’u said the video forced her into isolation for at least three months.

The actress came to the spotlight after playing out a role in ‘Safara’u’in Kwana Casa’in series on Arewa 24 television.

In 2020, a nude video of hers leaked and went viral online, which led to her suspension from Kannywood. Reactions following the sexually rated content mainly condemned the Northern Nigerian actress for what was deemed immoral by many.

”One of my producers and director, Hassan Giggs, called me one day and said, Safara’u, why did you do that? I asked him what he was talking about. He then told me that my nude video was all over the internet. He then sent it to me,” she said in the interview.

”When I saw the video, I collapsed immediately. I couldn’t believe it. It happened. I record myself naked and save it on my phone. Many girls do that,” Safara’u said.

The Ibadan-bred actress added that she was devastated to the point of almost deactivating her social media accounts but her parents and family came to her aid with moral support.

BUT WHO LEAKED IT?

Speaking on who leaked the pornographic video, Safara’u said she suspected her friends who have access to her phone.

“About 70 per cent of ladies nowadays have nude videos on their phones. It is done for fun, not on social media, and many ladies do that. I can’t specifically say the person who released the video, but all I know is that it must be among my friends and associates who took my phone because I used to give them my phone,” she said.
