The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Federal University Kashere, has urged President Tinubu to honor Nimi-Briggs agreement with the Union to save public universities.
The FUK-ASUU branch, during a special Congress meeting on June 25, 2024, to discuss the union’s struggles and the federal government’s failure to honor agreements, chided the government for failing to honor agreements.
The meeting emphasized the need for President Tinubu to review and sign the Nimi-Briggs Committee renegotiated draft agreement to prevent the collapse of public universities.
Dr. Shehu Rasheed, ASUU-FUK Chairman said the 2009 FG/ASUU agreement, anchored on the International Labour Organisation (ILO) Convention No. 98, provides for collective bargaining and review every three years.
The union accuses the federal government of failing to implement various agreements, withholding salaries, and neglecting earned academic allowances.
The ASUU Chairman, stated that the union organized the meeting to sensitize stakeholders to pressure the government to meet their demands.
He emphasized that strikes affect students and the academics, and that the union’s goal is to improve the university system, making it competitive globally.
The union warns that failure to meet their demands may lead to unpleasant consequences for all stakeholders in the public university system.
