The International Center For Investigative Reporting (The ICIR) has commenced a three-day capacity building for 20 Northwest journalists selected for its Promoting Democratic Governance Reporting Project.
The participants, drawn from print, online and broadcast media, are being hosted for the training in Kano.
The US Embassy in Nigeria supports the project under its ‘Public Diplomacy Small Grants Programme’ to deepen the culture of accountability, transparency and good governance in Nigeria through data-driven accountability reporting.
Mr Dayo Aiyetan, the Executive Director of The ICIR said investigative and data journalism are effective catalysts for unearthing corruption and holding power – government and private – to account in the best interest of the public.
On his part, Robert Gabor, Spokesperson of US Embassy said a free press is a sinequanone to democracy, hence, the US attaches great importance to Freedom of Expression
WikkiTimes reports that the participants were selected from the seven states of the Northwest for the project.
